London’s average advertised salary rises faster, breaking £40k level

The average salary of advertised jobs has gone up faster in London than the rest of the UK, with the capital average breaking through the £40,000 level for the first time.

Jobs search engine AllTheTopBananas.com analysed data from 780,585 advertised positions between October 2007 and March 2008, for its monthly salary index.

It found the average capital salary advertised was £40,168, up £895 from the figure released in last month’s index.

Across the UK the average salary advertised (excluding London figures) was £29,505, a rise of £715 from last month’s index.

Dave Martin is the MD of AllTheTopBananas.com, the UK’s most helpful jobs search engine.

He said: “Across all of the UK we have seen average advertised salaries rise for several months in a row now.

“There has always been a huge gap between average advertised salaries in London and the rest of UK. Data from the last salary index showed that gap getting smaller, whereas this index shows it growing again.

“It’s hard to predict how it’s going to go for the rest of the year, especially if the UK manages to talk itself into a recession.”

Because of the unique way AllTheTopBananas.com gathers, collects and displays jobs from hundreds of partner websites across the UK, the site has access to enormous amounts of data about the UK jobs market.

Right now the site has 239,789 vacancies online.

Every month it releases the salary index which contains a regional breakdown and figures for the top 50 towns and cities in the UK.

Across the regions in the April salary index, Wales is still second to London, with an average advertised salary of £32,628.

East Anglia is in third place with an average advertised salary breaking through the £31,000 barrier, at £31,209.

And the North East is still at the bottom of the table on £27,131.

The full salary index is online at www.AllTheTopBananas.com/salary.
